Hi, my name is Dr. Sunita Shenoy. I am a Clinical Psychologist in San Francisco.

Dr. Sunita Shenoy, Psychologist in San Francisco

Dr. Sunita Shenoy, Psychologist in San Francisco

I am licensed in California (CA PSY 25554), and I have a private practice in San Francisco where I see individuals in person and provide online therapy to individuals residing anywhere within California.

I received my Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree and my Master’s degree (M.A.) in Clinical Psychology from Alliant International University in San Francisco, California. Prior to that, I received my Bachelors (B.S.) degree in Business Administration with a double major in Accounting and Marketing from California State University, Long Beach.

As a Psychologist, I have worked at a variety of clinics within the San Francisco Bay Area providing mental health care through individual therapy, in person and online, couples therapy, group therapy and psychological testing. I have worked at Kaiser hospitals, several chronic pain clinics, private practice and for Doctor on Demand, one of the first telehealth organizations that provide video-based psychotherapy.

I specialize in therapy for anxiety, depression, work life balance, relationship problems, stress, self-esteem issues, the stress of changes or transitions, social anxiety, and cultural/race issues including but not limited to South Asian individuals.

I have been conducting online therapy sessions for several years before the COVID crisis, and I am certified in providing Telemental health care. My client’s healing and progress is of utmost importance to me. I combine methods and tailor my treatment to each individual client so they receive my best care. I have extensive training in areas including:

  • Comprehensive Energy Psychology including Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

  • Therapy for Grief and Grieving

Prior to becoming a Psychologist, I was on a career path to becoming an Accountant. I worked in several corporations providing accounting services and for the state of California doing state tax collections. As a working professional, I have experienced the stress of work, life, and trying to balance it all. During my Ph.D. studies, I conducted research on the relationship between workplace loneliness, sex discrimination and job satisfaction among corporate professionals. As a psychologist, I understand how work environments impact our quality of life. Providing therapy for working professionals, I help you navigate stressful work cultures and set boundaries that increase your confidence.

I have worked at Kaiser Hospitals in the Addiction medicine department and Psychiatry department. I developed and led the Social Anxiety Treatment program there, which helped hundreds of Kaiser patients who were suffering social fears to better understand, manage, cope and heal from social anxiety disorder. My ability to understand the pain of social anxiety enabled me to provide helpful ways to improve social confidence and comfort.

In addition to providing therapy through my private practice, I am an adjunct professor at the City College of San Francisco, where I teach a class on the Psychology of Race and Ethnic Relations. In this class, we explore the psychological impact of prejudice, discrimination, racism, and privilege.

I am first generation Indian American and have the personal experience of being Indian living in a Western culture, balancing two different cultures, dealing with family, culture and race issues. My doctoral dissertation studied how achievement motivation were related to psychological well-being in Indian students. As one of few South Asian therapists, my cultural sensitivity and understanding helps Indians, South Asians and other diverse communities dealing with stressors related to culture, religion, tradition and family values.

I work with individuals who are motivated towards having a more meaningful life. I will be honest and gentle, empathetic and compassionate as I help you figure out the next steps towards your goals. With a variety of experience and passions that lend to expertise in several specialties, I can help you find balance in your life and feel more centered in who you are.
